Four nights in Cairo means no hotel changes and no early-morning packing; the only long day is Luxor, and you fly there and back. Meals are taken care of, with half board at the hotel plus lunch at a good local restaurant every day of touring. Your private Egyptologist collects you after breakfast for the Giza Plateau. You see the three pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the panoramic viewpoint over the plateau, and the Great Sphinx beside the Valley Temple of Khafre, with time to understand how the pyramids were built and why. Entry into the Great Pyramid itself is optional and ticketed separately.
Lunch at a deluxe local restaurant, then the Grand Egyptian Museum, a few minutes away. Your guide takes you past the colossus of Ramesses II in the atrium, up the Grand Staircase and into the Tutankhamun galleries, where the boy king’s complete burial treasure is displayed together for the first time since its discovery. Return to your hotel; dinner at the hotel.

An early transfer to Cairo Airport for the one-hour flight to Luxor, where your Luxor Egyptologist is waiting. On the West Bank you enter the Valley of the Kings, burial ground of the New Kingdom pharaohs, and visit three of its painted royal tombs (the tombs of Tutankhamun, Seti I and Ramesses V/VI carry separate tickets and can be added). Next is the terraced Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari. Hatshepsut began as regent for Thutmose III and went on to rule as a crowned king in full pharaonic regalia, with his regnal years still running alongside hers. You pass the Colossi of Memnon, the two seated giants that guarded the mortuary temple of Amenhotep III.
After lunch at a local restaurant, cross to the East Bank for Karnak, the largest religious complex ever built at around 100 hectares, with its Great Hypostyle Hall of 134 columns, and finish at Luxor Temple as the evening light comes in. Transfer to Luxor Airport for the flight back to Cairo and your hotel. Dinner at the hotel.

Drive north through the Delta to Alexandria, about two and a half hours. You begin underground at the Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa, a Roman-period family tomb that grew into a public necropolis, cut three levels into the rock and decorated in a rare blend of Egyptian and Greco-Roman style. Nearby stands Pompey’s Pillar, a single 27-metre column of red Aswan granite raised for the emperor Diocletian around AD 300 on the site of the Serapeum, Alexandria’s great temple of Serapis.
On the seafront you visit the Citadel of Qaitbay, built in 1477 on the foundations of the Pharos lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders, and then the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the modern successor to the ancient library. Lunch at a local restaurant with a view of the Mediterranean, then drive back to Cairo. Dinner at the hotel.

After breakfast and check-out, your guide takes you to the Citadel of Saladin, founded in 1176 to defend Cairo against the Crusaders, and the Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali on its summit, with a view over the whole city. Continue to Coptic Cairo for the Hanging Church, built above the gate towers of the Roman fortress of Babylon, the Church of Abu Serga, associated with the Holy Family’s stay in Egypt, and the Ben Ezra Synagogue. Lunch at a local restaurant, then shop at Khan El-Khalili bazaar. A private transfer to Cairo International Airport for your departure.
