Luxor Day Tours, Planned by Guides Who Live Here

Half-day, full-day and overnight trips on both banks

Why Luxor Rewards More Than One Day

We are based in Luxor. That is not a positioning line — our guides live on the east bank, and the Luxor day tours on this page were built by people who walk into these temples in August as well as January. It shows in the small decisions: which tomb is worth the separate ticket on the morning you happen to be there, which side of Karnak takes the light at eight, when to leave a site alone because three cruise ships have just moored.

The east bank holds the temples of the living. Karnak is the largest religious complex ever built, around a hundred hectares, and it grew over roughly two thousand years as one pharaoh after another added to it. Luxor Temple sits two miles south, connected to it by the avenue of sphinxes, now excavated along its full length and open again. Both fit comfortably into a half day, and Luxor Temple after dark is better than most people expect.

Across the river is the necropolis. The Valley of the Kings rotates which tombs are open, so a standard ticket admits you to three chosen on the day, while Tutankhamun, Seti I and Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens are ticketed separately. Hatshepsut’s mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari rises in three terraces set against the cliff — she began as regent for Thutmose III and went on to rule as a crowned king in full pharaonic regalia, with his regnal years still running alongside hers. Past the headline sites, Medinet Habu, the Ramesseum, Deir el-Medina and the tombs of the nobles are quieter, and for surviving painted decoration they are frequently better.

Luxor is also a base. Dendera and Abydos are a long day north, and Dendera’s ceiling carries the finest astronomical decoration left anywhere in Egypt. Edfu and Kom Ombo are a long day south. Aswan and Abu Simbel work as overnights, and Cairo is possible as a single very long day by plane.

Every tour on this page is private: your own Egyptologist, your own driver, your own vehicle, with pickup from your Luxor hotel or your ship’s mooring. Start early. From May to September the middle of the day on the west bank is punishing, and the sites are better empty regardless of the season.

An unforgettable and beautifully orchestrated Egypt experience An unforgettable and beautifully orchestrated Egypt experience We just returned from an incredible trip to Egypt with Egypt Best Vacations, and it was truly one of the most memorable journeys our family has taken. Egypt can feel overwhelming at first — the airports, early morning flights, cruise schedules, temple visits, Cairo traffic, tickets, transfers, and the sheer magnitude of history everywhere you go. But Egypt Best Vacations handled the logistics with impressive precision and made the entire experience feel effortless. That allowed us to be fully present and enjoy the trip instead of constantly worrying about the next step. Our journey began in Cairo and then continued to Luxor, where we boarded our Nile cruise to Aswan. Luxor was absolutely extraordinary. Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, and the Colossi of Memnon were all breathtaking. What made the visits even more meaningful was having a knowledgeable guide who could explain the history, symbolism, and significance behind what we were seeing. In Egypt, the right guide makes a huge difference — otherwise you are just looking at ancient stones without understanding the civilization behind them. The Nile cruise was another highlight. Sailing between Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Aswan gave the trip a beautiful rhythm. Philae Temple was stunning, and Abu Simbel was worth every minute of the early morning journey. Standing in front of those monumental temples is humbling and almost surreal. Back in Cairo, we visited the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Coptic Cairo, the Citadel, and Khan El-Khalili. Each place had its own character, from the grandeur of the pyramids to the spiritual depth of Coptic Cairo and the energy of the bazaar. The itinerary was ambitious, but it never felt chaotic because the team managed the details so well. What we appreciated most was the professionalism, responsiveness, and genuine care from Egypt Best Vacations. They were punctual, organized, flexible when needed, and clearly experienced in creating a smooth experience for travelers. For a first trip to Egypt, that kind of coordination is invaluable. I would highly recommend Egypt Best Vacations to anyone planning to visit Egypt. They helped turn a complex itinerary into a seamless, enriching, and unforgettable adventure.

Amazing, informative and easy! We had the BEST experience with this tour company. We are a family of 5 with 3 younger children and needed a way to see Cairo on our own schedule. We were referred this company from a friend and so glad we booked. We were met at the airport before passport control by one of the guides who escorted us through the visa process, passport control, luggage and straight into an awaiting van. Our driver took us to the hotel for our afternoon checkin. The next morning our tour guide MINA met us. He was cheerful, friendly and so intelligent. As we drove out to the pyramids of Giza he point out local places and gave us much information about them. He also made learning about where we were going interesting for our children. He worked with our pace and interests. He taught us so much about the pyramids. We were bought to a great lunch spot with great food whic and as included in our booking. The GEM museum was huge (20 football fields huge!) Mina was as so respectful of our children and made sure we saw the most important parts of the exhibitions to make the trip quick and effective. Our first day was perfect. On our 2nd day Mina took us to Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur. Again he made this trip so quick, pointing out the important things and making sure our children were enjoying themselves and learning as well. We are so grateful to the team who made this trip so easy and enjoyable!

Great Experience on the Nile The boat was excellent and very comfortable, with a top-notch crew who always provided professional and attentive service. Very clean and the cabin was spacious enough for 2 people. You could also find beer and/or wine on board. The food was ok, and one evening the crew even provided entertainment with music and dance after we had moored shortly before arriving in Aswan. Amazing bbq that night!! Ahmed our guide was incredibly generous with his time, always happy to answer questions, and constantly went above and beyond to make our experience richer and more meaningful. Beyond being an outstanding guide, Ahmed was also a wonderful person: intelligent, funny, thoughtful, and a true pleasure to spend time with. Thanks to him, we discovered not only the magnificence of Egypt’s ancient past, but also the kindness, humor, and hospitality of its people. He took us also to a Patisserie to taste Egyptian sweets. This made the entire trip feel far deeper and more authentic than a standard tour experience. We left Egypt absolutely enchanted, and much of that was thanks to Egypt Best Vacations, Essam and his team, our guide Ahmed, and the entire Dahabiya crew. Highly recommended.

Outstanding service and highly recommend We spent eight nights away and was highly impressed with the service. For the airport pick up, the tour guides, the hotels, the transport, the cruise and every aspect of our holiday, it simply was the best. It removed any chaos and was an easy holiday being guided the whole way through. I highly recommend this company and their services to any people looking for a great holiday away with educational tour guides and an amazing experience with lots of great memories. Won’t get better than this!

Our 9-Day Egyptian Adventure Our 9-day tour to Cairo, Alexandria, and the Nile cruise with Egypt Best Vacations was a fantastic and memorable experience. From the moment we landed in Cairo, the logistics were seamless; a representative helped us through customs, and we had reliable transportation for every pick-up and drop-off throughout the trip. Both our hotel stays and the cruise ship were very comfortable. Our guides were the true highlight of the journey. In Cairo, Omar shared his deep knowledge and even taught us how to read cartouches, adjusting his explanations based on the group’s interest. In Aswan and Luxor, Khalifa led us with incredible passion, providing the perfect context for the site and artifacts. Both were friendly, professional, and excellent communicators. The itinerary was reasonably paced, giving our group just enough time to explore these massive sites on our own while ensuring we didn't miss the most important details. If you want a professionally organized tour with expert guides who make the most of your time, I highly recommend this company.

Well organized and hassle free group tour Essam was super responsive from the moment we booked all the way through the end of the trip. Everything was really well organized and ran exactly according to the itinerary, which made the whole experience stress-free. We had a few specific requests for our hotel and cruise, and he was able to make it happen without any issues. We were a bit worried at first because of the Middle East conflict, but Essam was very reassuring, kept communication open throughout, and provided updates when needed. He also handled things professionally for anyone in the group who preferred to cancel, which we appreciated. We were also welcomed at the airport by Tory, who handled everything seamlessly—from visa processing to hotel and flight check-ins—so arrival and departures were completely hassle-free. The guides were also great—Omar in Cairo/Alexandria and Khalifa in Aswan/Luxor were both very knowledgeable, shared a lot of historical context, and answered questions in detail, which made the tours much more interesting and engaging. Even the airport pickups and drop-offs were smooth and well-coordinated. Overall, it felt like a very well-organized group tour where you didn’t have to worry about the details at all.

Excellent! Amazing journey and super skilled and kind guide. Ahmed advised us about the excursions and the best treasures to focus on, and also made multimedial contents for us so that the explanations would be clearer! He took care that everything would be fine and without setbacks, I literally had nothing to think/worry about.

more than a guided tour We highly recommend this agency for the incredible trip they organized for us in Egypt. From the very beginning, their customer service was punctual, attentive, and extremely well organized, and they created a tailor-made itinerary that perfectly matched our expectations. The experience included a sustainable Nile cruise, private transfers, visits to all the must-see sites along the Nile, an English-speaking guide, and all meals on board. Everything was arranged at a very high level, and the transfers were always exclusive and seamless. A special mention goes to our guide, Khalaf. He was much more than a tour guide: he was a true travel companion throughout the journey. We shared meals and had conversations that went far beyond a simple sightseeing trip, which made the experience truly memorable and personal. The boat itself was also a wonderful surprise — a level of luxury we honestly did not expect. For all these reasons, we strongly recommend this agency and their guide to anyone looking for an outstanding experience in Egypt

Related FAQs About Luxor Day Tours

Most Asked Questions about Luxor Day Trips & Excursions

What are the best day tours to do in Luxor?

If you have one day, take the full-day East and West Bank tour: Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s temple at Deir el-Bahari and the Colossi of Memnon, with lunch between banks. If you have a half day, pick a bank rather than rushing both. If you have already done the headline sites, Medinet Habu, Deir el-Medina and the tombs of the nobles are where the best-preserved painting actually is.

What is the difference between the East Bank and the West Bank?

The east bank was for the living: Karnak, Luxor Temple, the modern town, the hotels and the market. The west bank was for the dead — the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, the mortuary temples and the workmen’s village at Deir el-Medina. The ancient Egyptians put the necropolis where the sun sets, and the division is that literal. A full day covers both.

How much do Luxor day tours cost?

From around $40 for a half day at Karnak and Luxor Temple, and from about $90 for a full day across both banks including lunch. Longer runs to Dendera and Abydos, or Edfu and Kom Ombo, start near $95 and $110. The sunrise balloon is separate. Prices depend on group size and on which extra tomb tickets you decide to buy on the day.

How many days do you need in Luxor?

One full day covers the essentials. Two gives you both banks unhurried plus the balloon. Three or more lets you reach Dendera, Abydos, or the quieter west bank sites that most visitors never see. We also run three, four and five-day Luxor packages with accommodation for anyone treating Luxor as the destination rather than a stop.

Are Luxor day tours private, and is a guide included?

Every Luxor day tour here is private — your own licensed Egyptologist guide, your own driver and your own air-conditioned vehicle, with no other travellers joining. Pickup is from your Luxor hotel or directly from your ship’s mooring.

Do tours include entrance fees and lunch?

Main entrance fees and full-day lunches are included. Three tickets are not, because they are sold separately at the gate and priced well above the standard fee: the tomb of Tutankhamun, the tomb of Seti I, and the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens. Your guide will tell you on the day whether they are worth it for you — Seti I and Nefertari usually are, Tutankhamun less often, since the objects that made it famous are now in the Grand Egyptian Museum.

Which tombs are open in the Valley of the Kings?

It changes. The site rotates tombs to limit humidity damage, so the open set on any given morning is decided by the inspectorate rather than published in advance. A standard ticket admits you to three of whichever tombs are open that day. This is one of the more useful things about touring with a local guide: we can see what is open when we arrive and pick the three worth your time, rather than working from a list written six months ago.

Is the Luxor Pass worth buying?

It can be, if you are staying several days and intend to see a lot. The pass covers the sites on both banks over a set number of days, and the premium version adds the Seti I and Nefertari tombs, which are the expensive tickets. For a single day tour it will not pay for itself. It must be bought in person, and you need your passport and a passport photo. Ask us before you buy and we will tell you honestly whether your itinerary justifies it.

Is the sunrise balloon ride safe, and is it worth it?

Worth it, yes — around forty minutes over the west bank at first light, with the mortuary temples, the cultivation and the desert edge all laid out below you. On safety: Egyptian balloon operations are regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority and were substantially tightened after a fatal accident in 2013, with flight numbers capped and stricter weather limits imposed. Flights are cancelled outright when conditions are wrong, which happens often enough in winter that you should book it for the first morning of your stay rather than the last, so there is room to reschedule. We book with licensed operators only.

Can I take a Luxor day trip from Hurghada, or from my Nile cruise?

Yes to both. From Hurghada it is a long road day and we run it as a full East and West Bank excursion. For cruise guests, we pick up at your mooring — this is a popular option because ship programs tend to move large groups through the same three sites at the same hour, and a private guide lets you go at your own pace or see something the ship does not include.

What should I wear and bring?

Light, breathable clothing, a hat, sunglasses and closed shoes with grip — the ground on the west bank is uneven, and tomb ramps can be slippery underfoot. Bring more water than you think, sunscreen, and cash in small notes for extra tickets and tips. Photography inside the tombs is now free, but flash is not permitted — it damages the pigment, and the guards will stop you.

When is the best time to visit Luxor?

October to April for comfort, with December and January the coolest. May to September is genuinely hot — often above 40°C on the west bank — which is why we start at sunrise and finish the outdoor sites before midday. Whatever the month, the first two hours after opening are the best of the day: cooler, emptier, and the light across the temples is at its most useful.

Note: Luxor sits in the path of totality for the total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027, and we run separate small-group tours for it. If you are planning around that date, see our 2027 Luxor eclipse day tours.
