Desert camping and felucca sailing are the two corners of Egyptian tourism where the gap between a well-run operator and a cheap one is widest, and it shows up in the vehicles, the drivers, the bedding and the food rather than anywhere in the brochure.

On this site it means a trip whose backbone is landscape and activity rather than only sightseeing — desert camping in the White Desert, sailing the Nile by felucca, snorkelling the Red Sea, or climbing Mount Sinai — with the temples and tombs still guided properly by an Egyptologist.
Basic and excellent. The crew pitches camp inside the national park at sunset, cooks over a fire, and you sleep in the open or under a simple shelter with mattresses and blankets provided. There is no running water and no toilet block. Nights from December to February get close to freezing.
It is comfortable in the way a good campsite is comfortable. You sleep on the open deck with mattresses and blankets, meals are cooked on board, and washing facilities are minimal. If that is not what you want, a dahabiya gives you the same slow sailing with a private cabin and a bathroom.
For the desert and the felucca, no — the driving and sailing do the work. For Mount Sinai, yes: it is a two to three hour climb in the dark, on uneven ground, at altitude. Tell us honestly what you can manage and we will tell you honestly whether an itinerary suits.
Desert camping and felucca sailing both work well from about eight upwards, and children usually take to them better than adults do. Under that age the Red Sea combinations are the easier choice. Because short trips are private, the pace is yours to set.
Yes, and it is one of the most popular shapes we run. A week gets you a workable version; ten days does it comfortably. Longer expeditions add the Nile.
October to April. We do not recommend desert camping between June and August, when daytime temperatures in the Western Desert regularly pass 45°C.
Trips of six days or fewer are always private. From seven days you can choose between a small group capped at sixteen and a private departure. Luxury itineraries are private regardless of length.
Short desert trips start around $440 for four days. Two-week expeditions combining desert, Nile and coast run from roughly $1,900. Price depends on length, group size and the standard of hotel and ship you choose — send us your dates and we will quote properly rather than guess.
