What a Combined Egypt and Jordan Itinerary Covers

In Egypt you visit the Giza plateau and the Grand Egyptian Museum, then fly south for the temples and tombs of Luxor and Aswan. Most itineraries of ten days and over add a three or four night Nile cruise between the two cities, calling at Kom Ombo and Edfu along the way.

In Jordan you explore Roman Jerash, stand on Mount Nebo, walk the Siq into Petra, and finish at the Dead Sea. Longer programs add a night in the Wadi Rum desert. A small number of itineraries continue into Israel for Jerusalem and the Holy Land sites.

How Many Days You Need

Seven days is the shortest realistic combination and covers Cairo, Petra and the Dead Sea at a brisk pace. Ten to fourteen days is the sweet spot: it adds Luxor, Aswan and a Nile cruise on the Egyptian side, and Wadi Rum and Jerash on the Jordanian side. Seventeen and twenty-one day programs add Alexandria, Abu Simbel and a slower rhythm between sites.

When to Travel

October to April is high season in both countries, with daytime temperatures around 20 to 25°C — comfortable for Petra, Wadi Rum and the Giza plateau alike. Christmas, New Year and Easter are the busiest and most expensive weeks, and they book out first. June to August is very hot in Upper Egypt and the Jordanian desert; if you travel then, expect early starts and a rest through the middle of the afternoon.
