After lunch at a local restaurant, continue to the Grand Egyptian Museum, the largest collection of ancient Egyptian treasures in the world, where you see the complete Tutankhamun collection in modern galleries. Today’s spiritual Cairo tour begins at the Citadel of Saladin, built in 1176 to protect Cairo from the Crusaders, and the Mohammed Ali Mosque (the Alabaster Mosque) inside its walls. Continue to Coptic Cairo and the Hanging Church, one of Egypt’s oldest churches, known for its wooden ceiling and historic icons. Visit Abu Serga Church (Saints Sergius and Bacchus), built over the cave where tradition says the Holy Family stayed during their flight into Egypt, and Ben Ezra Synagogue, where the Cairo Geniza manuscripts were found. End the day in the narrow lanes of the Khan El-Khalili bazaar, with its spice stalls, jewelry shops, and traditional cafés, before returning to your hotel.

Drive north to Gadara (Umm Qais), a Roman city with views over the Yarmouk Valley, the Golan Heights and the Sea of Galilee. Its theaters, fountains and underground wells remain, and the village was lived in until 1989. Continue to Jerash, Jordan’s largest Roman site, with its ceremonial gates, colonnaded streets, temples and theaters. Finish at Ajloun Castle, a fine example of Arab-Islamic military architecture built in 1184-1185 in the time of Salah al-Din to counter the Crusaders. Return to Amman.

A day for Christian pilgrims. Begin at Bethany beyond the Jordan, the site of John the Baptist’s settlement where Jesus was baptized, part of the early Christian pilgrimage route between Jerusalem, the Jordan River, and Mount Nebo. In Madaba, visit the 19th-century Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, home to a mosaic map made around 560 AD: the oldest surviving map of the Holy Land, with 157 Greek captions marking biblical sites from Egypt to Palestine. Finish on Mount Nebo, where Moses is said to have looked over the Promised Land and where, according to Christian tradition, he was buried. Return to Amman.

Spend a full day in Petra, carved from the rock some 2,000 years ago by the Nabataeans, who controlled the trade routes of ancient Arabia from here. Walk through the narrow Siq gorge until the Treasury appears, then continue past the Street of Facades, the Court House, and the Theater. If time allows, climb the 1,200 steps to the Monastery. After your tour, drive back to your hotel in Amman.

Begin on the Mount of Olives for the classic view over Jerusalem, then walk to the Western Wall (Wailing Wall), one of the holiest sites in Judaism. Follow the Via Dolorosa and the Stations of the Cross to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, believed to be the site of Jesus’ crucifixion and burial. In the afternoon, travel to Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus, to visit the Church of the Nativity and the Grotto of the Manger, then return to your hotel in Jerusalem.

Take the cable car to the top of Masada and explore the ruins of the fortress built by King Herod. Then drive along the shore to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth, which has drawn visitors for thousands of years; Herod the Great is said to have bathed here.
