The catacombs of Kom El-Shoqafa are one the largest Roman burial sites not just in Alexandria but in Egypt. From the Pompey’s Pillar to the magnificent Citadel of Qaitbay. The Citadel of Qaitbay in Alexandria is one of the most important fortifications in Egypt. It was constructed by Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay to defend Egypt against the Ottomans/Turks.

Then proceed to the World War II Cemetery of the Commonwealth. This cemetery contains the graves of men who died at all stages of the Western Desert campaigns, brought in from a wide area, but especially those who died in the Battle of El Alamein at the end of October 1942 and in the period immediately before that.
Continue the Italian Memorial, or ‘Sacrario italiano a El Alamein’. The memorial is a white octagonal monument to the 4,800 Italian soldiers who died in the 1942 Battle of El Alamein and the approximately 38,000 missing. There is also a nearby chapel.
