2027 Solar Eclipse Tours

2027 Luxor Eclipse, Egypt

The Longest Total Solar Eclipse Until 2114 — 2 August 2027, Luxor

On 2 August 2027 the Moon’s shadow crosses Egypt, and Luxor sits almost directly beneath it. Totality lasts 6 minutes and 23 seconds. Nowhere on Earth will see that much again until 2114.

For comparison: the 2024 eclipse across North America managed 4 minutes 28 seconds at its very best, and a typical total eclipse gives you two or three minutes. This one gives you the better part of seven — over a city built by people who worshipped the Sun as a god and aligned their temples to its movements.

The odds are on your side, too. August in Upper Egypt runs at roughly 80% clear skies, among the most reliable eclipse conditions anywhere on the planet. At maximum the Sun sits 82 degrees above the horizon, almost directly overhead, so nothing on the skyline can get in the way.

Egypt Best Vacations is based in Luxor. We are not flying in for the week — we live under this sky, and we have been planning for this date for years.

Most Asked Questions about 2027 Luxor Eclipse Tours

When is the 2027 total solar eclipse in Egypt?

The total solar eclipse crosses Egypt on Monday 2 August 2027. In Luxor, maximum eclipse falls around the middle of the day and totality lasts 6 minutes and 23 seconds. The partial phases begin a little over an hour before and continue for about an hour afterwards.

How long will totality last in Luxor?

6 minutes and 23 seconds. That is exceptional — a typical total solar eclipse gives two to three minutes, and the 2024 eclipse across North America reached 4 minutes 28 seconds at its maximum. The point of greatest eclipse falls in desert roughly 60 kilometres southeast of Luxor, which puts the city very close to the centreline.

Why is the 2027 solar eclipse in Egypt so special?

Three reasons. It is the longest total solar eclipse until 2114, at 6 minutes 23 seconds. Luxor sits almost directly beneath the path, with the Sun 82 degrees above the horizon so nothing on the skyline obstructs it. And August in Upper Egypt has roughly an 80% probability of clear skies, among the most reliable eclipse weather anywhere on Earth.

Where is the best place to watch the 2027 eclipse in Egypt?

Luxor and its surroundings. Within Luxor, the choice is between the great temples — Karnak, Luxor Temple, Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari — the open desert horizons of the West Bank, the deck of a Nile cruise ship, or a desert site outside the city. Each is a genuine trade between atmosphere, crowds, shade and open sky. Egypt Best Vacations will match you to the right one.

What time will the eclipse happen in Luxor?

Maximum eclipse in Luxor falls around the middle of the day, with the Sun almost directly overhead at 82 degrees. Partial phases begin roughly an hour and a quarter beforehand. Exact contact times vary by a few seconds across the city, and your guide will give you precise timings for your viewing location before the day.

What are the chances of clear skies for the 2027 eclipse?

Historically around 80% for Upper Egypt in early August, based on long-term cloud-cover records. That is among the best odds available anywhere along the path of totality, and it is a large part of why eclipse chasers worldwide have chosen Egypt for this one. No forecast is a guarantee, which is why viewing location and the ability to move matter.

Do you offer private 2027 solar eclipse tours?

No. Every eclipse itinerary runs as a small-group departure with a maximum of 25 travellers, and that is deliberate. Eclipse day in Luxor is a logistics problem — viewing sites will be allocated, access controlled, and the whole city trying to be in position within the same short window. One carefully sized group at one secured location is how we make sure everybody is standing in the right place when totality begins. Twenty-five is small for this event; many operators will run coaches of forty or fifty. Private touring on the days either side of the eclipse can be arranged.

Are eclipse glasses included in your tours?

Eclipse glasses are not included. Bring ISO 12312-2 certified solar viewers — ordinary sunglasses are never safe. Your Egyptologist guide will tell you exactly when it is safe to remove them and when to put them back on. Please also note that tripods require a permit inside Egyptian temples.

Are eclipse glasses included in your tours?

No. Recommendation is to include ISO 12312-2 certified viewers for every guest: they cost very little, they remove a real safety risk, and they make a memorable keepsake on a package starting at $2,700.

Is it safe to look at the solar eclipse?

Only with proper protection, and only at the right moment. Use ISO 12312-2 certified solar viewers for every phase except totality itself. Ordinary sunglasses are never safe. Never look through a camera, phone, binoculars or telescope while wearing eclipse glasses — the optics concentrate the light and cause injury almost instantly. During totality it is safe, and necessary, to look with the naked eye; put the viewers back on the instant the first sliver of Sun returns.

What does totality actually look like?

The light thins for an hour, then drops fast in the final minute. Baily’s beads appear as the last sunlight streams through valleys on the Moon’s edge, followed by the diamond ring. Then the corona — the Sun’s outer atmosphere, invisible on any other day — surrounds a black disc, the horizon glows orange in every direction, stars and planets appear, the temperature falls several degrees, and the birds go quiet.

How hot is Egypt in August?

Hot. Luxor runs 40 to 42°C by day and can reach 45, though humidity is very low, which makes it more bearable than the same temperature elsewhere. Egypt Best Vacations itineraries work around it: sightseeing starts when sites open at 6am, the middle of the day is spent indoors or resting, and all vehicles are air-conditioned. Cairo is milder at 35 to 36°C, and the Red Sea and Alexandria milder again.

How far in advance should I book a 2027 eclipse tour?

As early as you can. Luxor has a finite number of hotel rooms and Nile cruise cabins, and eclipse chasers worldwide have had this date in their calendars for years. Hotels, ships and the best viewing arrangements are expected to be fully committed well before August 2027.

Can I combine the eclipse with a Nile cruise?

Yes, and several of our itineraries do. A Luxor to Aswan cruise pairs naturally with the eclipse, and a ship’s deck is one of the more comfortable places to watch from — shade, cold drinks and open sky over the water. Cruise itineraries also cover Kom Ombo, Edfu, Philae and the Unfinished Obelisk.

Can I book only a Luxor eclipse day tour?

Yes. Independent travelers already in Egypt can book our Luxor eclipse day tours without taking a full package, choosing a specific viewing location for the day itself.

What accommodation is included in the eclipse packages?

Accommodation varies by itinerary, and typically includes 4-star hotels and Nile cruise ships in the Deluxe and Ultra Deluxe categories — roughly 4 and 4.5 stars by Western standards. Every package lists its specific hotels and ship category.

Are the 2027 eclipse tours suitable for families?

Yes, with two caveats worth taking seriously. August heat in Upper Egypt is demanding for young children, so pacing matters. And children need close supervision around solar viewers — the safety rules are absolute and a child will not feel the damage if they break them. Tell us the ages when enquiring and we will build the days accordingly.

Do I need a visa for Egypt?

Most nationalities can obtain an e-Visa in advance or a visa on arrival. Requirements and fees change, so check the official Egyptian e-Visa portal for your nationality before travelling, and allow extra time in the run-up to the eclipse when application volumes will be unusually high.

What are your payment terms for 2027 eclipse tours?

Eclipse packages are paid in two stages. 50% of the total price secures your booking, and the remaining 50% falls due in March 2027, roughly five months before travel. All payments are taken by card through a secure payment link sent to you directly — we never request card details by email or telephone. Bookings made after March 2027 are payable in full at the time of booking.
