The hill on which the pillar is erected was covered with temples and houses a long time before the Roman era. It was the place of the Citadel of Rhakotis. A temple was dedicated to Osiris-Serapis was built on the mountain.

Then proceed to the World War II Cemetery of the Commonwealth. This cemetery contains the graves of men who died at all stages of the Western Desert campaigns, brought in from a wide area, but especially those who died in the Battle of El Alamein at the end of October 1942 and in the period immediately before that.

Is your 5-day itinerary suitable for children/elderly?

Yes, if paced correctly. Some sites involve a lot of walking on uneven sand/stone (not wheelchair friendly). Most of Egypt’s museums are very well prepared for wheelchairs. and However, with private transport and a relaxed schedule (avoiding midday heat), it is manageable for kids and the elderly

What should I pack/wear for my 5-day tour in Egypt?

For a 5-day tour in Egypt, smart packing makes sightseeing easier and far more comfortable. Expect sun, dust, lots of walking, and cooler evenings in winter. Light, breathable fabrics are your best friend. Cotton and linen work perfectly.

You will walk on sand, stone, and uneven ground. So, comfortable walking shoes or sneakers needed. Egyptian sunshine is strong all year. So, pack a hat or cap, sunglasses, high SPF sunscreen and lip balm.  Most important rule: comfort over fashion. Long sightseeing days mean practical clothing wins every time.

For women, Egypt is used to tourists, but modest clothing makes visits smoother and reduces unwanted attention. Bikinis are fine at hotel pools and beaches. Bring a cover-up for walking around the property. Women travelers in Egypt do not need to cover their hair, but having a scarf is helpful for mosque visits.

Is Egypt safe for tourists (especially families/women)?

Yes. Egypt is generally very safe, especially in the famous tourist corridors like Cairo, Giza, and Luxor. Security is visible, organized, and used to welcoming visitors from everywhere.

Now, let’s talk about what “adventure” might actually mean.

For solo female travelers, the main challenge is rarely danger. It’s more about enthusiastic salesmanship. You may gain several new “best friends” offering papyrus, taxi rides, scarves, or a very special price just for you. You might also meet a few unofficial “guides” who appear magically and start explaining things you didn’t ask about.

A smile and a polite but firm “No, thank you” works wonders. Sunglasses help too, they are the universal symbol of I am not shopping today.

The genuine no-go areas are North Sinai and near the Libyan border. Your tour will not go anywhere close to them, so relax.

In short: the biggest risk in Egypt is buying more souvenirs than your suitcase can handle.
