Short: two to four days, desert first

If the White Desert is the reason you are coming, these give you the most desert for the fewest days. The 4 Day White Desert Safari from Cairo ($440) is the pure version: three nights camped in the desert, the Agabat pass, the Karaween dunes and both the old and new White Desert, and no city sightseeing at all. The 3 Days Cairo and White Desert Tour Package ($450) and the 4 Days Cairo and White Desert Adventure ($640) add the Giza Pyramids at one end. From the Red Sea, the 2-Day White Desert Adventure from Hurghada ($440) and the 3-Day Cairo Pyramids and White Desert Tour from Hurghada ($670) collect you from your resort and get you to the desert and back inside a long weekend.

Medium: five to eight days, desert plus one more thing

The 5 Day Cairo and White Desert Tour ($700) is our most booked combination: two full days in Cairo for the Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Citadel and Khan el-Khalili, then the night in the desert. The 6 Day Cairo, White Desert and Hurghada Tour ($1,140) finishes on the beach. The 7 Day Egypt Tour with White Desert Camping ($1,290) swaps the cruise for flights: Cairo, then Aswan, Abu Simbel and Luxor by air and train, and the desert night to finish. The 8 Day Cairo, Nile Cruise and White Desert Adventure ($1,400) is the shortest tour that manages all three: Pyramids and the GEM, a 3-night Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor, and the desert night on day seven.

Long: eleven to fifteen days, the whole country

These are the tours for a first visit when you want to see Egypt properly and are not planning to come back soon.

What a White Desert Safari Actually Looks Like

The road from Cairo runs 370 km south-west across flat gravel plain to Bahariya Oasis, a ring of date palms and hot springs in a depression below the desert floor, with the ruins of a Roman fort and the tombs where the Golden Mummies were found. This is where the tarmac ends and the 4×4 begins.

South of Bahariya the ground turns black. The Black Desert is a plain of low hills capped with dark volcanic rock, and your driver will take you up one of them for the view: dozens of identical cones marching to the horizon like a field of slag heaps built by a giant. Then comes Crystal Mountain, a low ridge of calcite and quartz crystals with a natural arch through it, glittering in the sun and cool to the touch, followed by the Valley of Agabat, where the chalk first appears as tall white cliffs and stacks rising from golden sand.

The White Desert proper begins about 45 km before Farafra. It is a national park, protected since 2002, and the formations you have seen in photographs are here: the mushroom, the chicken, the sphinx, the rabbit, each a lump of Cretaceous chalk left standing when the softer rock around it blew away. Your driver knows the tracks that reach the best of them, and stops when the light is right rather than when a timetable says so. Camp is pitched among the formations. Dinner is cooked over the fire, tea follows, the desert foxes come to look at you, and the Milky Way comes out in a way it never does anywhere with electricity. At dawn the chalk goes pink, then white, and you have an hour to walk among the sculptures before breakfast and the drive back.

How the Desert Days Work

Vehicles. Cairo to Bahariya is by private air-conditioned car or minibus. Bahariya onwards is by 4×4, usually a Toyota Land Cruiser carrying four to six passengers with the camp equipment on the roof, driven by a Bedouin from the oasis. On the multi-day Egypt tours, your Egyptologist guides the Cairo, Nile and Alexandria days and hands you to the desert team for the safari; on the desert-only tours a Bahariya guide accompanies you throughout.

Camping. The crew sets up the camp, not you: a windbreak of blankets, mattresses and sleeping bags, a tent if you want one, though most people sleep out under the sky. Meals are cooked on site, typically grilled chicken, rice, vegetables and bread for dinner, eggs and bread for breakfast, with tea at every opportunity. There is no toilet block; there is a very large desert. Bottled water is in the vehicle.

Comfort. There is no electricity and no phone signal from mid-afternoon until you reach Bahariya the next day. Bring a power bank for your camera and a head torch. Winter nights can fall close to freezing between December and February, so a warm layer, a hat and socks matter more than you would think for a desert.

Best Time for Egypt White Desert Tours

October to April. Days are warm to hot, nights are cold, and the sky is clear. Late October, November, March and early April are the sweet spot, with day temperatures in the mid-twenties and nights around 5 to 10 degrees. December and January give the sharpest stars but the coldest nights, so pack properly. May to September is not recommended: daytime temperatures in the desert pass 40 degrees and the drive from Cairo becomes an endurance test. If summer is your only window, tell us and we will suggest the Nile-and-Red-Sea version of your tour without the desert leg.

New-moon weeks are the best for stargazing; full-moon nights turn the chalk silver and are better for photographs of the formations. Both are worth it, and if you have a preference, tell us your dates and we will match a departure.

Who These Tours Are For

Anyone who can climb into a 4×4 and sleep on a mattress on the ground. That includes most families with school-age children, who tend to love the camp more than the adults do, couples looking for a night nobody else on their trip will have, and solo travellers, who on the small-group tours have company around the fire. The desert is not suitable for travellers with mobility problems, for very young infants, or for anyone who needs a reliable phone signal overnight.
