Egypt New Year Tours 2027 & 2028: Where to Be at Midnight

Most holidays are about where you go. New Year’s Eve is about where you are at one particular moment. Our Egypt New Year tours are built around that moment: on the top deck of a Nile cruise ship as fireworks open over the water, on a terrace facing the floodlit Pyramids, or on a Red Sea beach with the party running to sunrise.

Around it sits Egypt at its best. Late December and early January bring the clearest skies and mildest temperatures of the year — low twenties in Cairo, warmer in Luxor and Aswan, and the low winter light that makes the temples photograph the way you hoped they would.

Every New Year package we run is fully private: your own qualified Egyptologist guide, your own vehicle, your own pace. And if your trip is anchored on 25 December rather than the 31st, see our Egypt Christmas tours instead.

    Fantastic

Great tour. Our guide Essam was excellent. He was very knowledgeable and articulated the tour well. Offering our group good advice on how to customize our tour based on our interests. He was sure to warn us on all potential scams aswell as unnecessary/non affiliated persons. He also went above by making our restaurant reservations for us.

We enjoyed our Egypt travels through Egypt Best Vacations. Essam is the best tour coordinator and guide one can find! I am so glad we found him because he made our trip memorable in so many ways! He was always able to make the tours fun by telling us stories of the past in engaging ways! He was always helpful and gave us honest guidance regarding all local experiences eg. How to behave with street vendors. You felt you could trust him and rely on him fully through the travel!

Related FAQs About Egypt New Year Tours

Most Asked Questions about Egypt New Year Vacation Packages

Where is the best place to spend New Year's Eve in Egypt?

It depends what you want from the night. A Nile cruise ship gives you a gala dinner and fireworks over the water with no logistics to think about. Giza offers a terrace facing the floodlit Pyramids. Sharm El-Sheikh is the country’s biggest New Year’s Eve party. Luxor is the quietest, and leaves you with near-empty temples on 1 January.

Is a New Year's Eve gala dinner compulsory in Egypt?

In almost all cases yes. Hotels and Nile cruise ships across Egypt apply a compulsory gala dinner supplement on 31 December. It is charged per person, added to the room or cabin rate, and applies whether or not you attend. This is standard practice nationally rather than an operator policy. Egypt Best Vacations quotes it at the time of booking so it is never a surprise at check-in.

What happens at an Egyptian New Year's Eve gala?

A seated set-menu dinner, usually from around 8 or 9pm, followed by live music and typically a tanoura and belly dance show. Fireworks go up at midnight on most cruise ships and Red Sea resorts. Dress is smart-casual on most ships and hotels, and closer to formal on luxury vessels.

Do Nile cruises sail over New Year's Eve?

Yes, and they are the most popular way to spend the night in Egypt. Ships sail on fixed departure days, which means only certain sailings have guests on board at midnight on 31 December. Those specific departures sell out first. If a New Year’s Eve on the water is what you want, book that before anything else in your trip.

Can you see fireworks at the Pyramids on New Year's Eve?

The Giza plateau is floodlit through the night, and several hotels and restaurants face it directly, which is where the well-known midnight photographs come from. Official firework displays at the plateau itself vary year to year and are not guaranteed, so book a venue for its view rather than on the assumption of a display.

Is 1 January a public holiday in Egypt, and what is open?

1 January is an official public holiday in Egypt. Banks and government offices close, but archaeological sites, museums and the Grand Egyptian Museum keep normal hours. It also falls on the Egyptian weekend in both upcoming seasons — a Friday in 2027 and a Saturday in 2028 — so city traffic is unusually light, which makes it a good morning to be at Giza.

Do I need to plan around Friday prayers over New Year?

Yes, though which day depends on the season. Egypt’s weekend runs Friday to Saturday, and working mosques such as Al-Azhar and the Sultan Hassan complex are busiest around midday on Fridays. For New Year 2027 that Friday is 1 January itself. For New Year 2028 it is New Year’s Eve, 31 December 2027. Visit mosques early morning or late afternoon on those days. Temples, tombs and museums are unaffected.

What is the weather like in Egypt at New Year?

Mild, dry and sunny. Cairo averages 19 to 20 degrees Celsius by day and 8 to 10 at night in early January. Luxor and Aswan are warmer at 23 to 24 by day but drop to 5 to 8 after dark. Hurghada sits around 22 degrees with sea temperatures near 22. Pack layers — evenings and dawn starts are genuinely cold.

How much does an Egypt New Year tour cost?

Egypt New Year packages from Egypt Best Vacations cover short Cairo breaks through to two-week itineraries taking in the Pyramids, a Nile cruise and the Red Sea. Late December and early January is Egypt’s peak season, and rates carry seasonal supplements alongside the compulsory 31 December gala charge. Contact us for current pricing on your dates.

How many days do you need for a New Year trip to Egypt?

Four to five days covers Cairo, the Pyramids and the countdown itself. Six to eight days adds a Nile cruise, Aswan or a Red Sea stay. Ten days and up lets you take in New Year and stay through to Coptic Christmas on 7 January, which is the fullest version of the season.

Which is better for New Year, Sharm El-Sheikh or Hurghada?

Sharm El-Sheikh is Egypt’s biggest New Year’s Eve party destination, with resort galas, beach clubs and music running to sunrise. Hurghada is warmer in tone and more family-paced, with resort galas and beach parties but a calmer atmosphere. Choose Sharm for a real party and Hurghada for a family celebration.

Can I combine New Year with Coptic Christmas in Egypt?

Yes, and it is the most interesting way to spend the season. Egypt’s Coptic Orthodox community celebrates Christmas on 7 January, a national public holiday, with a midnight liturgy on the evening of the 6th. A trip running from late December into the second week of January takes in New Year’s Eve and a genuinely ancient Christmas in one journey.

Are Egypt New Year tours private or group tours?

Every New Year package from Egypt Best Vacations is fully private. You travel with your own qualified Egyptologist guide, your own vehicle and driver, and at your own pace. Nothing is shared with strangers, and itineraries can be adjusted around your dates and interests.

Do you charge extra for children on Egypt New Year tours?

Children are discounted rather than surcharged. On ground tours without domestic flights, children under 6 travel free, ages 6 to 11 pay 50 percent of the adult rate, and 12 and over pay the adult rate. On packages that include domestic flights, ages 0 to 2 pay 30 percent, 3 to 5 pay 40 percent, 6 to 11 pay 50 percent, and 12 and over pay the adult rate. Gala supplements are charged separately and may apply to children.

When should I book an Egypt New Year tour?

Four to six months ahead, and earlier if you want a specific Nile cruise ship. The 20 December to 5 January window is the busiest in Egyptian tourism and sells out in a predictable order: the best cruise ships first, then Pyramid-view hotel rooms, then everything else. Inside six weeks, expect limited choice at full peak-season rates.

Is it safe to travel to Egypt at New Year?

Egypt is generally safe and welcoming for tourists over the New Year period, with well-developed tourism infrastructure and visible security at major sites and resorts. Travelling with a licensed local operator like Egypt Best Vacations adds a private Egyptologist guide, vetted hotels and ships, private transfers and on-the-ground support throughout.
