Overview

Christmas in Egypt: the Pyramids, Philae and the Temples of Abu Simbel

Christmas in Egypt trades grey skies for 20°C sunshine, and this four-day Abu Simbel Christmas tour puts three of the country’s greatest monuments into one short holiday: the Pyramids of Giza, the island temple of Philae, and the colossi Ramses II cut into a Nubian cliff.

You begin in Cairo on the Giza Plateau, with the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx, timed to reach the plateau before the December coach parties thicken. If your arrival falls on 24 December, your Christmas Eve gala dinner is served at your hotel that evening — already inside your quoted price, not added at reception. The next morning you fly south to Aswan, the warmest and gentlest of Egypt’s classic cities.

The third day is the reason people book this itinerary rather than a Cairo-only one. You leave Aswan before dawn and drive south through the Western Desert to Abu Simbel, where the four seated colossi of Ramses II and the smaller temple he raised for Nefertari stand as they have for three thousand years — though 65 metres higher up the cliff than they were, moved block by block between 1964 and 1968 to save them from the rising water of Lake Nasser. Your final day returns to Cairo for the Grand Egyptian Museum, Saladin’s Citadel and the spice lanes of Khan El Khalili.

Everything on this tour is private. Qualified Egyptologist tour guides, one driver, one vehicle, your own pace — no fixed departure list and nobody else’s schedule. Domestic flights, hotels and entrance fees are all in the price.

Tour Highlights

  • Christmas on the Giza Plateau — The Great Pyramid of Khufu, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, and the Sphinx in its enclosure — explained by a qualified Egyptologist rather than pointed at from a coach window.
  • The colossi of Abu Simbel — The Great Temple of Ramses II and the Temple of Nefertari, plus the story of the 1964–1968 UNESCO rescue that lifted the whole complex 65 metres clear of Lake Nasser.
  • Philae Temple on Agilkia Island — The temple of Isis — goddess of magic, healing and motherhood — reached by motorboat, and itself moved stone by stone from its original island when the High Dam was built.
  • The Grand Egyptian Museum — The complete Tutankhamun collection, golden mask included, in the largest archaeological museum in the world. A gala dinner that is already paid for — Egyptian hotels apply a compulsory Christmas Eve dinner charge on 24 December. Ours is built into the quote, so there is nothing to settle at check-in.
  • Private from the arrivals hall onwards — Our representative meets you inside the terminal at Cairo, not outside it, and walks you through visa and passport formalities before you reach the car.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Cairo, Egypt - Cairo Pyramids Tour

Your Egypt Best Vacations representative meets you inside the arrivals terminal at Cairo International Airport, holding a signboard with your name, and stays with you through visa and passport formalities. Your Egyptologist and private driver are waiting at the car.

You go straight to the Giza Plateau. Your guide takes you through the Great Pyramids — how they were built, who built them, and why the alien theories collapse the moment you look at the workers’ village and the quarry marks. You will see the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, and the panoramic point where all three line up. Then down to the Sphinx and its Valley Temple, where the causeway and the granite casing survive.

Lunch at a local restaurant. Afterwards you check into your Cairo hotel. If today is 24 December, your Christmas Eve gala dinner is served at the hotel this evening and is already covered by your booking.

Meals: Lunch  |  Overnight: Cairo

Day 2Fly to Aswan — High Dam, Philae Temple & Unfinished Obelisk

Breakfast at the hotel, then a transfer to Cairo airport for your morning flight to Aswan. Your Aswan guide meets you on arrival.

You start at the Aswan High Dam, built between 1960 and 1970, which ended the annual Nile flood, generates a large share of Egypt’s electricity, and created Lake Nasser — the same lake that forced the rescue of Abu Simbel, which you will see tomorrow.

Then to Philae Temple, reached by motorboat. The temple stands today on Agilkia Island, not its original site: like Abu Simbel, it was dismantled and rebuilt on higher ground. It is dedicated to Isis, goddess of magic, healing and motherhood, and it was one of the last places in Egypt where the old religion was still practised.

Your last stop is the Unfinished Obelisk, still lying in its granite quarry. Had it been finished it would have been the largest ever raised; a crack in the stone stopped the work, and what was left behind is the clearest surviving evidence of how obelisks were cut.

Lunch at a local restaurant. Then to your Aswan hotel. An early night is worth it — tomorrow starts before dawn.

Optional add-ons today: a Nubian village visit

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch  |  Overnight: Aswan

Day 3Visit Abu Simbel Temples - Fly back to Cairo

An early start. You leave Aswan before sunrise and drive roughly three hours south through the Western Desert, arriving at Abu Simbel while the light is still low and the site is at its quietest. Breakfast is packed from the hotel.

Nothing prepares you for the scale. Four seated colossi of Ramses II, each around twenty metres high, front the Great Temple, carved directly into the sandstone cliff and aligned so that twice a year the rising sun reaches the sanctuary at the very back. Beside it stands the smaller temple Ramses built for Nefertari, where — unusually for Egypt — the queen is shown the same height as the king.

Your guide will also show you the seam. Between 1964 and 1968 the entire complex was cut into more than a thousand blocks and reassembled 65 metres higher and 200 metres back from the water, inside an artificial mountain built to hold it. Once you know where to look, you can see the joins.

You drive back to Aswan, lunch at a local restaurant, and take your afternoon flight to Cairo. Transfer to your Cairo hotel for the night.

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch  |  Overnight: Cairo

Day 4Grand Egyptian Museum, the Citadel & Khan El Khalili — departure

Breakfast, then your last day in Cairo. You begin at the Grand Egyptian Museum, the largest archaeological museum in the world and now home to the complete Tutankhamun collection — more than five thousand objects shown together for the first time, the golden mask among them.

From there to the Citadel of Saladin, begun in 1176 on the Muqattam spur, and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali inside it — the alabaster mosque, Ottoman in plan, with the best view over Cairo on a clear December morning.

Lunch at a local restaurant. Then Khan El Khalili, the great mediaeval bazaar, for cotton, spice, silver and coffee at El Fishawy. Your guide will show you what things should cost before you start haggling.

Transfer to Cairo International Airport for your departure flight. If you are staying on for New Year, tell us at the enquiry stage and we will extend the itinerary rather than sell you a second trip.

FAQs

Is this Christmas tour private or a group tour?

It is private. Every Egypt Best Vacations tour under seven days runs privately, which means your own Egyptologist guide, your own driver and your own vehicle throughout. There is no fixed departure list and no other travellers joining you — the tour runs on your arrival date, not ours.

Can I do this itinerary over New Year instead of Christmas?

Yes. The same four days work equally well across 31 December, and hotels in Cairo and Aswan run New Year gala dinners just as they do on Christmas Eve. If your trip is anchored on New Year’s Eve rather than Christmas Day, our Egypt New Year tours collection is built around those dates and will be a better starting point.

Is the Christmas Eve gala dinner included in the price?

Yes. Egyptian hotels apply a compulsory gala dinner charge on 24 December — this is national practice across the industry, not a policy of ours. Where your itinerary covers that night, the gala dinner is built into the price you are quoted, so there is nothing extra to settle at reception.

How do you reach Abu Simbel on this tour — by road or by air?

By road as standard. You leave Aswan before dawn in a private air-conditioned vehicle and drive roughly three hours south through the Western Desert, arriving while the site is still quiet and the light is low. The short Aswan–Abu Simbel flight is available as a paid upgrade if you would rather not spend seven hours on the road; ask us for the supplement on your dates.

How long does the Abu Simbel day take?

Expect to leave the hotel around 4 to 5am and be back in Aswan by early afternoon. The drive is about three hours each way on good desert road, with roughly two hours at the temples. You then have lunch in Aswan and fly to Cairo in the afternoon. It is a long day, and it is the day everybody remembers.

What is the weather like in Cairo and Aswan at Christmas?

Cairo runs around 20 to 21°C by day and 9 to 11°C at night in late December. Aswan is warmer, around 25 to 26°C by day, dropping to 9 to 11°C after dark. Rain is very unlikely in either city. The dawn drive to Abu Simbel is the genuinely cold part of this trip, so bring a jacket.

Are the domestic flights included?

Yes. Cairo to Aswan on day two and Aswan back to Cairo on day three are both included, along with all airport transfers. Only your international flights into and out of Cairo are excluded.

Which dates does this Christmas tour run?

Any date across the festive window, roughly 20 December to 5 January. Because the tour is private it departs on the day you arrive rather than on a set schedule. Travelling between 25 December and 7 January also lets you catch Coptic Orthodox Christmas, which is a public holiday in Egypt and one of the quietest, best days of the year to be at the Pyramids.

Is four days enough for Cairo, Aswan and Abu Simbel?

It is tight but it works, because the domestic flights do the heavy lifting and each day has a single clear focus. What four days will not give you is slack — there is no spare afternoon. If you would rather not start a day at 4am, our five-day Cairo, Luxor and Aswan Christmas tour covers similar ground at a gentler pace, and the six-day Pyramids and Nile cruise package adds the river.

What should I pack?

Layers. Days are shirt-sleeve warm and evenings are cool, and the pre-dawn start for Abu Simbel is properly cold — a fleece or warm jacket earns its place in the case. Bring closed comfortable shoes for temple floors and pyramid ramps, sun protection even in December, and something modest covering shoulders and knees if you plan to visit the Mosque of Muhammad Ali or any Coptic church.

Do I need a visa, and how much is it?

Most nationalities need a tourist visa for Egypt. It costs $30 and can be bought on arrival at Cairo airport or applied for online in advance through the official e-visa portal. Our representative meets you inside the arrivals terminal and helps you through the process, so you are not working it out alone after a long flight.

Is this tour suitable for children?

Yes, with one caveat: the Abu Simbel morning starts before dawn and involves six to seven hours in a vehicle, which is a lot for a young child. Families with under-8s often prefer our Cairo-based Christmas itineraries. Children are discounted rather than surcharged — on this package, which includes domestic flights, ages 0–2 pay 30%, 3–5 pay 40%, 6–11 pay 50% and 12 and over pay the adult rate.

Can I add Luxor or a Nile cruise to this tour?

Yes. Luxor sits between Cairo and Aswan and adds naturally as two extra days, and a three or four night festive Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor slots straight onto the end of day two. Tell us at the enquiry stage and we will rebuild the itinerary rather than sell you a second package.

How far ahead should I book a Christmas tour?

Four to six months. Late December is the single busiest period in Egyptian tourism, and Cairo hotel rooms with a pyramid view and Aswan allocations go first. Booking early will not remove the seasonal supplement, but it does secure the lower fare bands and the better hotels before they close.
