Christmas in Egypt: the Pyramids, Philae and the Temples of Abu Simbel
Christmas in Egypt trades grey skies for 20°C sunshine, and this four-day Abu Simbel Christmas tour puts three of the country’s greatest monuments into one short holiday: the Pyramids of Giza, the island temple of Philae, and the colossi Ramses II cut into a Nubian cliff.
You begin in Cairo on the Giza Plateau, with the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx, timed to reach the plateau before the December coach parties thicken. If your arrival falls on 24 December, your Christmas Eve gala dinner is served at your hotel that evening — already inside your quoted price, not added at reception. The next morning you fly south to Aswan, the warmest and gentlest of Egypt’s classic cities.
The third day is the reason people book this itinerary rather than a Cairo-only one. You leave Aswan before dawn and drive south through the Western Desert to Abu Simbel, where the four seated colossi of Ramses II and the smaller temple he raised for Nefertari stand as they have for three thousand years — though 65 metres higher up the cliff than they were, moved block by block between 1964 and 1968 to save them from the rising water of Lake Nasser. Your final day returns to Cairo for the Grand Egyptian Museum, Saladin’s Citadel and the spice lanes of Khan El Khalili.
Everything on this tour is private. Qualified Egyptologist tour guides, one driver, one vehicle, your own pace — no fixed departure list and nobody else’s schedule. Domestic flights, hotels and entrance fees are all in the price.
Christmas on the Giza Plateau — The Great Pyramid of Khufu, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, and the Sphinx in its enclosure — explained by a qualified Egyptologist rather than pointed at from a coach window.
The colossi of Abu Simbel — The Great Temple of Ramses II and the Temple of Nefertari, plus the story of the 1964–1968 UNESCO rescue that lifted the whole complex 65 metres clear of Lake Nasser.
Philae Temple on Agilkia Island — The temple of Isis — goddess of magic, healing and motherhood — reached by motorboat, and itself moved stone by stone from its original island when the High Dam was built.
The Grand Egyptian Museum — The complete Tutankhamun collection, golden mask included, in the largest archaeological museum in the world. A gala dinner that is already paid for — Egyptian hotels apply a compulsory Christmas Eve dinner charge on 24 December. Ours is built into the quote, so there is nothing to settle at check-in.
Private from the arrivals hall onwards — Our representative meets you inside the terminal at Cairo, not outside it, and walks you through visa and passport formalities before you reach the car.
Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Cairo, Egypt - Cairo Pyramids Tour
Your Egypt Best Vacations representative meets you inside the arrivals terminal at Cairo International Airport, holding a signboard with your name, and stays with you through visa and passport formalities. Your Egyptologist and private driver are waiting at the car.
You go straight to the Giza Plateau. Your guide takes you through the Great Pyramids — how they were built, who built them, and why the alien theories collapse the moment you look at the workers’ village and the quarry marks. You will see the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, and the panoramic point where all three line up. Then down to the Sphinx and its Valley Temple, where the causeway and the granite casing survive.
Lunch at a local restaurant. Afterwards you check into your Cairo hotel. If today is 24 December, your Christmas Eve gala dinner is served at the hotel this evening and is already covered by your booking.
Meals: Lunch | Overnight: Cairo
Day 2: Fly to Aswan — High Dam, Philae Temple & Unfinished Obelisk
Breakfast at the hotel, then a transfer to Cairo airport for your morning flight to Aswan. Your Aswan guide meets you on arrival.
You start at the Aswan High Dam, built between 1960 and 1970, which ended the annual Nile flood, generates a large share of Egypt’s electricity, and created Lake Nasser — the same lake that forced the rescue of Abu Simbel, which you will see tomorrow.
Then to Philae Temple, reached by motorboat. The temple stands today on Agilkia Island, not its original site: like Abu Simbel, it was dismantled and rebuilt on higher ground. It is dedicated to Isis, goddess of magic, healing and motherhood, and it was one of the last places in Egypt where the old religion was still practised.
Your last stop is the Unfinished Obelisk, still lying in its granite quarry. Had it been finished it would have been the largest ever raised; a crack in the stone stopped the work, and what was left behind is the clearest surviving evidence of how obelisks were cut.
Lunch at a local restaurant. Then to your Aswan hotel. An early night is worth it — tomorrow starts before dawn.
Day 3: Visit Abu Simbel Temples - Fly back to Cairo
An early start. You leave Aswan before sunrise and drive roughly three hours south through the Western Desert, arriving at Abu Simbel while the light is still low and the site is at its quietest. Breakfast is packed from the hotel.
Nothing prepares you for the scale. Four seated colossi of Ramses II, each around twenty metres high, front the Great Temple, carved directly into the sandstone cliff and aligned so that twice a year the rising sun reaches the sanctuary at the very back. Beside it stands the smaller temple Ramses built for Nefertari, where — unusually for Egypt — the queen is shown the same height as the king.
Your guide will also show you the seam. Between 1964 and 1968 the entire complex was cut into more than a thousand blocks and reassembled 65 metres higher and 200 metres back from the water, inside an artificial mountain built to hold it. Once you know where to look, you can see the joins.
You drive back to Aswan, lunch at a local restaurant, and take your afternoon flight to Cairo. Transfer to your Cairo hotel for the night.
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch | Overnight: Cairo
Day 4: Grand Egyptian Museum, the Citadel & Khan El Khalili — departure
Breakfast, then your last day in Cairo. You begin at the Grand Egyptian Museum, the largest archaeological museum in the world and now home to the complete Tutankhamun collection — more than five thousand objects shown together for the first time, the golden mask among them.
From there to the Citadel of Saladin, begun in 1176 on the Muqattam spur, and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali inside it — the alabaster mosque, Ottoman in plan, with the best view over Cairo on a clear December morning.
Lunch at a local restaurant. Then Khan El Khalili, the great mediaeval bazaar, for cotton, spice, silver and coffee at El Fishawy. Your guide will show you what things should cost before you start haggling.
Transfer to Cairo International Airport for your departure flight. If you are staying on for New Year, tell us at the enquiry stage and we will extend the itinerary rather than sell you a second trip.

Fantastic 8-day private tour of Egypt – highly recommended!
Fantastic 8-day private tour of Egypt – highly recommended! We recently returned from an amazing 8-day private tour of Egypt with Egypt Best Vacations, and we couldn't be happier with our experience! Our trip included Cairo, Aswan, Abu Simbel, a 3-night Nile cruise, Luxor and Giza. Everything was organised in advance, including domestic flights, hotels, transfers, transport, entrance tickets and private guides. From the moment we arrived, everything ran smoothly. The drivers were punctual, professional and reliable, and the whole trip was very well coordinated. A special mention goes to our guide in Cairo and Giza, Mina, who was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and professional. He made our visits particularly enjoyable, sharing interesting information and answering all our questions. We were also very happy with everyone involved throughout the trip, including our guides, drivers and airport representatives, who helped make the whole experience so smooth and stress-free. Cairo Airport was quite chaotic, but having a representative from the agency there to assist us made the process much easier, and we really appreciated their help. Overall, we had a fantastic experience and felt well looked after throughout the entire trip. Everything was very well organised, allowing us to enjoy Egypt without having to worry about the logistics. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Egypt Best Vacations to anyone planning a trip to Egypt. Highly recommended – definitely 5 stars from us!

Egypt Best Vacations is aptly named
We spent 10 days in Egypt with our friends. The entire trip was coordinated by Egypt Best Vacations. From the beginning, the communication was superb. We felt like we were coddled throughout the trip starting with Tarik who met us at the airport and facilitated and expedited the immigration process, to Karim who drove us safely everywhere around Cairo. Our guide Abdel was friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about Egyptian history, and made our experience very enjoyable. Seeing the pyramids in Giza, and visiting the new Grand Egyptian Museum was spectacular. We then flew south to Upper Egypt where Ahmed met us and guided us from Abu Simbel to Aswan and ultimately on our Nile River dahabeya cruise to Luxor. Kamal did a great job driving us in Upper Egypt, and we felt extremely safe along the way. Ahmed’s knowledge of Egyptian history is astounding, and he could easily be a professor on the subject. The entire trip was curated and coordinated by Essam who even came to meet us in Luxor, which was such a friendly gesture. We loved our Egyptian experience, and would absolutely recommend Egypt Best Vacations to anyone who is considering a trip to Egypt. There is no question that if we wanted to visit Egypt again, we would use this company and the entire crew again. This was a top notch company with top notch coordination.

Trip of a lifetime!
I truly cannot say enough wonderful things about this experience! From the moment we arrived in Cairo to our time in Luxor and four unforgettable days cruising the Nile River, every single detail was exceptional. Our incredible tour guide, Essam, and his associate, Ali, went above and beyond to make this journey extraordinary. Their knowledge of Egypt’s rich history, attention to detail, and genuine care for our safety and comfort made all the difference. The accommodations, the staff, the organization, and the seamless coordination of everything were absolutely outstanding. They even arranged unforgettable extras, including private ceremonies and a hot air balloon ride over Luxor, making an already magical experience even more special. I can say without hesitation that this was the best trip of my life. Egypt is a remarkable place, but experiencing it with this team took it to an entirely different level. I would recommend this company over and over and over again. Truly the trip of a lifetime!

O Voyage, incompetent provider for a Nile cruise in Egypt.
The O Voyages representative never showed up and completely ignored us; we were part of a group of 35 people who left from Orly, arrived in Cairo for a day, and then transferred by plane to Luxor for the Nile cruise. We spotted him at the Monte Carlo restaurant eating with the two guides since we were two groups of 35 people. No information from him. We saw that he was from O Voyages since he was wearing a black t-shirt with O Voyages on the back. Also, on 7/1/2026, we received an email from Leclerc Voyage indicating that our cruise was moved up by one day and that the flight plan was modified with an arrival in Cairo on September 4th instead of September 11th as scheduled in our program, stipulating that the services and visits remained unchanged. The other people in the group who had booked either through Leclerc Voyage or Carrefour received a new detailed program, whereas for us, we were told, "you are taking the program in reverse!!!!" Also, we left from Orly and returned to Roissy!!!! No information from Leclerc Voyage on this point, even though we had clearly stipulated that we had booked parking at Orly, so there were additional costs for a taxi on September 13th at midnight to take us to Orly to retrieve our car. Again on this point, the other members of our group had been well informed by Leclerc or Carrefour!!!! Regarding clothing in Egypt, same thing, Leclerc told us to wear clothes to the knee and keep arms covered for women, whereas all the tourists wear shorts even in the temples; the other people in our group had received the correct information again on this point!!!!! Non-existent costume party, and for the themed evenings indicated on the program, we had 2 groups of dancers 20 minutes before dinner. Visa indicated on the program at €48 while we paid €53!!!!! I do not recommend O Voyages at all, it is the 1st and last time I travel with your incompetent organization. positive point: our guide, fortunately, who raised the level of the trip but who seemed a bit lost regarding the program he had to follow with the changes made 2 months prior without a new program.

An unforgettable and beautifully orchestrated Egypt experience
An unforgettable and beautifully orchestrated Egypt experience We just returned from an incredible trip to Egypt with Egypt Best Vacations, and it was truly one of the most memorable journeys our family has taken. Egypt can feel overwhelming at first — the airports, early morning flights, cruise schedules, temple visits, Cairo traffic, tickets, transfers, and the sheer magnitude of history everywhere you go. But Egypt Best Vacations handled the logistics with impressive precision and made the entire experience feel effortless. That allowed us to be fully present and enjoy the trip instead of constantly worrying about the next step. Our journey began in Cairo and then continued to Luxor, where we boarded our Nile cruise to Aswan. Luxor was absolutely extraordinary. Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, and the Colossi of Memnon were all breathtaking. What made the visits even more meaningful was having a knowledgeable guide who could explain the history, symbolism, and significance behind what we were seeing. In Egypt, the right guide makes a huge difference — otherwise you are just looking at ancient stones without understanding the civilization behind them. The Nile cruise was another highlight. Sailing between Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Aswan gave the trip a beautiful rhythm. Philae Temple was stunning, and Abu Simbel was worth every minute of the early morning journey. Standing in front of those monumental temples is humbling and almost surreal. Back in Cairo, we visited the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Coptic Cairo, the Citadel, and Khan El-Khalili. Each place had its own character, from the grandeur of the pyramids to the spiritual depth of Coptic Cairo and the energy of the bazaar. The itinerary was ambitious, but it never felt chaotic because the team managed the details so well. What we appreciated most was the professionalism, responsiveness, and genuine care from Egypt Best Vacations. They were punctual, organized, flexible when needed, and clearly experienced in creating a smooth experience for travelers. For a first trip to Egypt, that kind of coordination is invaluable. I would highly recommend Egypt Best Vacations to anyone planning to visit Egypt. They helped turn a complex itinerary into a seamless, enriching, and unforgettable adventure.

FAQs
Is this Christmas tour private or a group tour?
It is private. Every Egypt Best Vacations tour under seven days runs privately, which means your own Egyptologist guide, your own driver and your own vehicle throughout. There is no fixed departure list and no other travellers joining you — the tour runs on your arrival date, not ours.
Can I do this itinerary over New Year instead of Christmas?
Yes. The same four days work equally well across 31 December, and hotels in Cairo and Aswan run New Year gala dinners just as they do on Christmas Eve. If your trip is anchored on New Year’s Eve rather than Christmas Day, our Egypt New Year tours collection is built around those dates and will be a better starting point.
Is the Christmas Eve gala dinner included in the price?
Yes. Egyptian hotels apply a compulsory gala dinner charge on 24 December — this is national practice across the industry, not a policy of ours. Where your itinerary covers that night, the gala dinner is built into the price you are quoted, so there is nothing extra to settle at reception.
How do you reach Abu Simbel on this tour — by road or by air?
By road as standard. You leave Aswan before dawn in a private air-conditioned vehicle and drive roughly three hours south through the Western Desert, arriving while the site is still quiet and the light is low. The short Aswan–Abu Simbel flight is available as a paid upgrade if you would rather not spend seven hours on the road; ask us for the supplement on your dates.
How long does the Abu Simbel day take?
Expect to leave the hotel around 4 to 5am and be back in Aswan by early afternoon. The drive is about three hours each way on good desert road, with roughly two hours at the temples. You then have lunch in Aswan and fly to Cairo in the afternoon. It is a long day, and it is the day everybody remembers.
What is the weather like in Cairo and Aswan at Christmas?
Cairo runs around 20 to 21°C by day and 9 to 11°C at night in late December. Aswan is warmer, around 25 to 26°C by day, dropping to 9 to 11°C after dark. Rain is very unlikely in either city. The dawn drive to Abu Simbel is the genuinely cold part of this trip, so bring a jacket.
Are the domestic flights included?
Yes. Cairo to Aswan on day two and Aswan back to Cairo on day three are both included, along with all airport transfers. Only your international flights into and out of Cairo are excluded.
Which dates does this Christmas tour run?
Any date across the festive window, roughly 20 December to 5 January. Because the tour is private it departs on the day you arrive rather than on a set schedule. Travelling between 25 December and 7 January also lets you catch Coptic Orthodox Christmas, which is a public holiday in Egypt and one of the quietest, best days of the year to be at the Pyramids.
Is four days enough for Cairo, Aswan and Abu Simbel?
It is tight but it works, because the domestic flights do the heavy lifting and each day has a single clear focus. What four days will not give you is slack — there is no spare afternoon. If you would rather not start a day at 4am, our five-day Cairo, Luxor and Aswan Christmas tour covers similar ground at a gentler pace, and the six-day Pyramids and Nile cruise package adds the river.
What should I pack?
Layers. Days are shirt-sleeve warm and evenings are cool, and the pre-dawn start for Abu Simbel is properly cold — a fleece or warm jacket earns its place in the case. Bring closed comfortable shoes for temple floors and pyramid ramps, sun protection even in December, and something modest covering shoulders and knees if you plan to visit the Mosque of Muhammad Ali or any Coptic church.
Do I need a visa, and how much is it?
Most nationalities need a tourist visa for Egypt. It costs $30 and can be bought on arrival at Cairo airport or applied for online in advance through the official e-visa portal. Our representative meets you inside the arrivals terminal and helps you through the process, so you are not working it out alone after a long flight.
Is this tour suitable for children?
Yes, with one caveat: the Abu Simbel morning starts before dawn and involves six to seven hours in a vehicle, which is a lot for a young child. Families with under-8s often prefer our Cairo-based Christmas itineraries. Children are discounted rather than surcharged — on this package, which includes domestic flights, ages 0–2 pay 30%, 3–5 pay 40%, 6–11 pay 50% and 12 and over pay the adult rate.
Can I add Luxor or a Nile cruise to this tour?
Yes. Luxor sits between Cairo and Aswan and adds naturally as two extra days, and a three or four night festive Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor slots straight onto the end of day two. Tell us at the enquiry stage and we will rebuild the itinerary rather than sell you a second package.
How far ahead should I book a Christmas tour?
Four to six months. Late December is the single busiest period in Egyptian tourism, and Cairo hotel rooms with a pyramid view and Aswan allocations go first. Booking early will not remove the seasonal supplement, but it does secure the lower fare bands and the better hotels before they close.
