Overview

Private 4 Day Cairo and Fayoum Luxury Tour

This private 4 day Cairo and Fayoum luxury tour pairs the Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum with a day among 40-million-year-old whale skeletons at Wadi El-Hitan, all from a 5-star base in Cairo with your own Egyptologist guide, driver and vehicle.

Fayoum lies about 100 km southwest of Cairo. It is Egypt’s oldest oasis, watered since pharaonic times by the Bahr Yusuf canal from the Nile, and its desert edge hides one of the most important fossil sites on earth. Wadi El-Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 for its late-Eocene skeletons of Basilosaurus and Dorudon, early whales that still carried small hind limbs, the clearest evidence anywhere of how whales moved from land to sea. Nearby, the Magic Lake in the Wadi El-Rayan protectorate shifts color through the day as light and mineral content change.

The Cairo days are just as strong. You stand before the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure and the Great Sphinx, then spend the afternoon in the Grand Egyptian Museum, where the complete Tutankhamun collection of more than 5,000 objects is displayed together for the first time. On the final morning you climb to the Citadel of Saladin, founded in 1176, visit the Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali, and walk through Coptic Cairo to the Hanging Church and the Church of Abu Serga.

You choose between two levels of 5-star hotel in Cairo, and every transfer, tour and meal is private, so the pace is yours. Book your 4 day Cairo and Fayoum luxury tour with Egypt Best Vacations, or ask us to adjust it.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Cairo, Egypt

Your Egypt Best Vacations representative meets you inside the arrivals terminal at Cairo International Airport with a signboard and helps you through visa and passport formalities. A private vehicle takes you to your 5-star hotel, where your 4 day Cairo and Fayoum luxury tour begins. Dinner is served at the hotel.

Meals Plan: Dinner Only

Day 2Giza Pyramids, Sphinx & GEM Museum

Your private Egyptologist guide collects you after breakfast for the Giza Plateau. The Great Pyramid of Khufu, at 146 m when complete, was the tallest structure on earth for nearly 4,000 years; beside it stand the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure and the Great Sphinx, carved from the bedrock of the plateau itself. Your guide explains how the Fourth Dynasty quarried, moved and set the blocks, and what the pyramids were for.

After lunch at a local restaurant you continue to the Grand Egyptian Museum. Climb the Grand Staircase past colossal royal statues to the galleries, where more than 5,000 objects from Tutankhamun’s tomb are shown together for the first time since their discovery in 1922. Return to your hotel for dinner.

Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3Wadi El-Hitan and the Magic Lake

Leave Cairo early for the two-hour drive to Fayoum and on into the Wadi El-Rayan protectorate, switching to a 4×4 for the desert track to Wadi El-Hitan. A marked walking trail leads between skeletons of Basilosaurus isis, up to 18 m long, and the smaller Dorudon, lying where they settled on the floor of the Tethys Sea some 37 to 40 million years ago. The on-site Fossils and Climate Change Museum sets the finds in context. After lunch at a local restaurant, continue to the Magic Lake, whose colours shift with the sun and the minerals in the water, before the drive back to Cairo. Dinner is at your hotel.

Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4Citadel, Alabaster Mosque, Coptic Cairo and Departure

After breakfast, drive up to the Citadel of Saladin, founded in 1176 and the seat of Egypt’s rulers for almost seven centuries. Inside, the Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali (1830-1848) rises in Ottoman style above the city. Lunch follows at a local restaurant, then Coptic Cairo: the Hanging Church, built above the gatehouse of the Roman fortress of Babylon, and the Church of Abu Serga, whose crypt is linked by tradition to the Holy Family’s stay in Egypt. Your driver then takes you to Cairo International Airport for your departure flight. Ask us about your next trip to Egypt.

FAQs

Is the 4 day Cairo and Fayoum luxury tour private?

Yes. Every Egypt Best Vacations luxury tour is fully private. You have your own Egyptologist guide, driver and air-conditioned vehicle from arrival to departure, and the timing of each day is flexible.

How far is Fayoum from Cairo, and how long is the Wadi El-Hitan day?

Fayoum is about 100 km southwest of Cairo, roughly two hours by road. Wadi El-Hitan lies deeper in the desert beyond Wadi El-Rayan, reached by 4×4 on a sand track. Expect a full day of around ten hours door to door, with an early start.

What will I see at Wadi El-Hitan?

Wadi El-Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site holding hundreds of fossil skeletons of early whales, mainly Basilosaurus and Dorudon, from 37 to 40 million years ago. A walking trail passes the largest skeletons in situ, and the on-site Fossils and Climate Change Museum displays a complete Basilosaurus.

Are domestic flights included?

No flights are needed. The whole tour is by road: Cairo, Giza and Fayoum are all within two hours of each other. There are no airport transfers between cities and no early check-ins.

Which hotels are used on this luxury tour?

Two levels of 5-star hotel are offered. The ultra deluxe price uses hotels such as the Sofitel Cairo Nile El Gezirah or the Kempinski Nile Hotel; the luxury price uses hotels such as the Four Seasons Nile Plaza, The St. Regis Cairo or The Nile Ritz-Carlton. The exact hotel is confirmed at booking.

Is the Grand Egyptian Museum fully open?

Yes. The Grand Egyptian Museum opened in full in November 2025, including the Tutankhamun galleries, and your ticket is included on day 2.

Can I go inside one of the pyramids?

Yes, on request. Entry to the interior of the Great Pyramid or one of the smaller pyramids requires a separate ticket that is not included in the price. Tell your guide on the day or let us know when booking.

Is the desert trip suitable for children or older travellers?

Yes. The fossil trail at Wadi El-Hitan is a flat walk of one to two kilometres, and the 4×4 section is short. Bring sun protection and closed shoes. In summer the desert is very hot, so we start early and keep the walk to the cooler part of the day.

What meals are included?

All nine meals: three breakfasts and three dinners at your hotel, and three lunches at local restaurants near each day’s sites. Tell us about dietary requirements when you book.

When is the best time for this tour?

October to April brings mild days for the desert walk and the pyramids. The tour runs year-round, and in summer we move the Wadi El-Hitan visit to the early morning.
