How do you want to travel the river?

A cruise ship is the comfortable answer — pool, full restaurant, fixed schedule. A dahabiya is the quiet one: ten cabins or fewer, sail power, and moorings the big ships cannot use. A felucca is an open boat and a mattress, which is the cheapest option and the closest to how the river was actually travelled.

What do you want the last five days to be?

Beach then desert, desert then beach, or beach then oasis. Siwa is the outlier — remote, spring-fed, its own language, a salt lake you float in. It is the one people either want badly or not at all.

Cairo and the Northern Detour

Every route starts in Cairo with two full days rather than one. The pyramids need no introduction; the Grand Egyptian Museum does, because it takes longer than anyone plans for. Beyond both, the medieval mosques and bazaars of Islamic Cairo and the quiet Coptic quarter that short trips skip.

Then Alexandria, which sits on the Mediterranean like a secret Egypt keeps from travellers in a hurry — a city of layered history and coastal light, with the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa cut three storeys down into the rock and the Qaitbay Citadel standing on the foundations of the Pharos lighthouse, built partly from its stone. A day here reframes what most people think Egypt is.

The Nile, Three Ways

Board in Luxor and sail south. Karnak first — the largest religious complex ever built, roughly 100 hectares, added to by pharaoh after pharaoh for close to two thousand years — then the Valley of the Kings across the river on the west bank.

Then the river stops being scenery and becomes the itinerary. Esna and its lock. Edfu, the most completely preserved temple in Egypt, Ptolemaic, built between 237 and 57 BC, its walls carrying a full set of ritual texts. Kom Ombo, the only fully doubled temple in the country, split down its axis between Sobek the crocodile god and Haroeris. And at Aswan, Philae on Agilkia Island, cut apart and rebuilt stone by stone when Lake Nasser rose.

How you travel that stretch is a real choice, not a price tier. The cruise ship, the dahabiya and the felucca give you three different rivers.

The Two Endings

This is what the sixteenth day pays for.

The Red Sea — Hurghada or Sharm El-Sheikh — is the easy one: warm water, serious reef, and nothing to do but stop. Good as a first ending or a last one.

The White Desert is the opposite. Chalk formations standing out of the sand like abandoned sculpture, camping under a sky with nothing between you and it. It is not a resort and we do not pretend otherwise.

Siwa Oasis is the remote one, eight hours west of the coast, spring-fed, with its own Berber language and a salt lake dense enough to float in. Siwa is the reason some people book sixteen days rather than fifteen.

Built Around Who You Are Travelling With

Families travel with guides who know how to pace a temple for a nine-year-old, and children are priced accordingly rather than as small adults.

Couples can upgrade the accommodation tier without changing the route, which is usually a better trade than paying for a different package.
