Cairo is Egypt’s vast capital and the starting point for almost every Egypt trip. It is home to the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World — the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx — and to the new Grand Egyptian Museum, which opened in full in November 2025 and displays the complete treasures of Tutankhamun together for the first time. Add the medieval bazaars of Khan el-Khalili, the mosques of Islamic Cairo, the churches of Coptic Cairo, and the Nile running through the middle of it all, and you have one of the world’s great historic cities. At Egypt Best Vacations we cover Cairo from start to finish with day tours, airport transfers, and multi-day tour packages.

Yes. The Grand Egyptian Museum, beside the Giza Pyramids, opened to the public on 4 November 2025, following its official inauguration on 1 November. All galleries are now accessible, including the complete Tutankhamun collection of more than 5,000 objects, displayed together for the first time since the tomb’s discovery, along with the Grand Staircase and the colossal statue of Ramesses II.
The pyramids are in Giza, on the southwestern edge of greater Cairo, roughly 45 minutes from the city centre depending on traffic. They are easily visited on a half-day or full-day tour.
Cairo is generally safe for visitors, especially in the main tourist areas. As in any large city, take normal precautions, use reputable operators, and keep an eye on your belongings in crowded places.
