Cairo is where most journeys to Egypt begin, and for many travellers it is the whole trip: a long weekend for the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, or a working week that adds Saqqara, the mosques and churches of the old city and a day on the Mediterranean in Alexandria. Our Cairo vacation packages run from two to five days, and the difference between them is simply how much of that list you want. Two days is the Pyramids and the Museum; three adds Saqqara and the Citadel; four adds Coptic Cairo, Khan El-Khalili and a full second museum day; five adds Alexandria.
The city’s sights fall into four groups, and every package is built from them. On the Giza plateau stand the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure and the Sphinx, with the Grand Egyptian Museum beside them holding the complete Tutankhamun collection. Half an hour south is Saqqara, where the Step Pyramid of Djoser began the whole pyramid tradition, with Memphis and, for those who want it, the Bent and Red Pyramids of Dahshur beyond. In the centre are Islamic Cairo, with the Citadel of Saladin and the Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali, and Coptic Cairo, with the Hanging Church and the Ben Ezra Synagogue. And Khan El-Khalili is where every package ends, with a coffee at one of its old cafes.

Yes. Entry to the Great Pyramid of Khufu is an optional ticket bought on the day; the Bent Pyramid at Dahshur and one of the Saqqara pyramids can also be entered on packages that visit them. Your guide advises which is worth it.
For a stay of five days or more, yes. It is two and a half hours each way, so it needs a full day: the Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa, the Citadel of Qaitbay, the Library and the Corniche. On shorter stays Saqqara is the better use of a day.
October to April. Summer is hot but workable with early starts, and the Grand Egyptian Museum is air-conditioned for the afternoons.
Yes. The sites, hotels and the routes between them are well policed, and you are with your guide and driver throughout. The usual city advice applies in the bazaar: keep valuables close and agree taxi prices in advance if you go out alone.
Most nationalities receive a visa on arrival at Cairo Airport for US$30, paid in cash. It is not included in the package; our representative helps you through the process.
