Overview

Visit Abydos and Dendera on a Full Day Tour from Luxor

Egypt Best Vacations’ private Dendera and Abydos day tour from Luxor runs 10–12 hours, from $95 per person, with hotel or Nile cruise ship pickup, all entrance fees, police permits and a licensed Egyptologist guide. Two temples that most visitors to Egypt never reach: the temple of Seti I at Abydos, carrying the finest raised relief carving to survive from ancient Egypt and the famous King List of 76 pharaohs, and the temple of Hathor at Dendera, where a decade of cleaning has brought a Ptolemaic ceiling back to its original colour.

It is a long day and worth every hour of it. Abydos lies about 155 kilometers north of Luxor and Dendera about 60, so we set out early, take the far site first, and work back towards home. Egypt Best Vacations is based in Luxor and your guide is a working Egyptologist, which matters more here than almost anywhere: Abydos and Dendera reward someone who can read the walls with you rather than point at them. As a TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Award winner for 2024, 2025 and 2026, we run the day privately, in your own air-conditioned vehicle, at your own pace. Your Dendera and Abydos Day Tour, Hour by Hour

6:00 AM: Your Egyptologist meets you in your hotel lobby in Luxor, or at your Nile cruise ship’s gangway. The early start is deliberate — Abydos is the far site and taking it first means you arrive before the coaches and drive home in the afternoon rather than the dark.

9:00 AM – 11:00 AM — The Temple of Seti I at Abydos: Abydos was the burial place of Osiris in Egyptian belief, and for three thousand years it was the most important pilgrimage site in the country. Seti I built his temple here in the 19th Dynasty and the carving inside is, by common consent, the finest raised relief that survives from ancient Egypt — figures standing a few millimetres proud of the stone, with colour still holding in the sheltered chambers. The plan is unique: an L-shape rather than the usual straight axis, with seven chapels dedicated to Osiris, Isis, Horus, Amun, Re-Horakhty, Ptah, and to Seti I himself as a god.

In the corridor beyond the second hypostyle hall your guide will show you the Abydos King List: seventy-six cartouches in two long registers, running from Menes to Seti I, with Seti and the young prince Ramesses depicted making offerings to their ancestors. It is one of the primary documents of Egyptian chronology — and just as revealing for who is missing from it, since Hatshepsut, Akhenaten and Tutankhamun were all quietly left out. Behind the temple lies the Osireion, a sunken hall of colossal granite pillars surrounded by groundwater, built as Seti I’s symbolic cenotaph and decorated under his grandson Merenptah. Ask your guide about the “helicopter” panel on the way through; the real explanation is better than the internet’s.

12:30 PM – 2:30 PM — The Temple of Hathor at Dendera: One of the most complete temple complexes anywhere in Egypt, begun under Ptolemy XII and continued by his daughter Cleopatra VII, whose portrait with her son Caesarion is carved on the outer south wall. You enter through the pronaos beneath twenty-four columns crowned with the face of Hathor, and the ceiling above you is the reason to come: centuries of soot from cooking fires have been painstakingly removed, and the sky goddess Nut, the rectangular zodiac, and the hours of the night have come back in deep blues, ochres and reds that look freshly painted. Your guide takes you down into the crypts, up the roof staircase to the Osiris chapels, and out to the sacred lake and the Roman gateway raised under Domitian and Trajan.

3:00 PM: The drive back to Luxor, arriving at your hotel or cruise ship in the late afternoon.

FAQs

What does the Dendera and Abydos day tour from Luxor include?

Egypt Best Vacations’ private full-day tour includes pickup and drop-off from your Luxor hotel or Nile cruise ship, entrance fees to the Temple of Seti I at Abydos and the Temple of Hathor at Dendera, a licensed English-speaking Egyptologist guide, a private air-conditioned vehicle, police permits, bottled water, and all service charges and taxes. Lunch, gratuities and travel insurance are excluded. The tour runs every day, lasts 10–12 hours, and takes groups of 1 to 16 people.

How much does the Dendera and Abydos tour cost?

The tour costs from $95 per person with Egypt Best Vacations, based on groups of 8–16 people. Smaller groups pay $110 per person (3–7 people), $125 per person for couples, and $205 for a fully private solo tour. All prices cover transport, entrance fees to both temples, permits, and your licensed Egyptologist guide.

How long is the drive from Luxor to Abydos and Dendera?

Abydos is about 155 kilometres north of Luxor, roughly three hours by road, and Dendera is about 60 kilometres north, roughly one hour. We drive to Abydos first and visit Dendera on the way back, which keeps the longest stretch of driving in the cool early morning and means you are not returning after dark. Total driving time is around five hours across the day, which is why the tour runs 10–12 hours in total.

Can I see the famous Dendera Zodiac?

You will see it, but you should know in advance that it is a replica. The original circular zodiac was cut from the ceiling of the Osiris chapel in 1821 and taken to France; it has been in the Louvre in Paris since 1922, and a plaster cast sits in its place at Dendera. Do not let that put you off. The rectangular zodiac on the pronaos ceiling is entirely original and, after years of soot removal, is now one of the most vividly coloured ancient ceilings you can stand under anywhere in Egypt.

Is lunch included, and where do we eat?

Lunch is not included in the tour price. We stop at a restaurant en route where you can order at your own expense, which keeps the tour price lower and lets you choose. Bottled water is provided in the vehicle throughout the day. Tell us in advance about any dietary requirements and we will pick the stop accordingly.

Do I need a police permit or travel in a convoy to reach Abydos?

Permits are handled by Egypt Best Vacations and included in your tour price — you do not need to arrange anything. Requirements for travel on this route are set by the authorities and can change at short notice, so your guide will confirm the arrangements for your date when you book.

Can you collect me from my Nile cruise ship?

Yes. We collect guests directly from their ship at the Luxor moorings as well as from hotels on both banks, at no extra cost. Because this is a full-day tour with an early start, tell us your ship’s schedule when you book so we can confirm the day works against your sailing times.

What are the "helicopter hieroglyphs" at Abydos?

They are a palimpsest — a carved surface reused. The original inscription carried the titles of Seti I; it was later filled with plaster and recarved with the titles of Ramesses II, and as the plaster fell away over the centuries the two overlapping texts merged into shapes that resemble modern machines to a modern eye. Your Egyptologist will show you the panel and read both layers, which is considerably more interesting than the version circulating online.

Is the Dendera and Abydos tour private, and is it suitable for children?

Yes, the tour is fully private with Egypt Best Vacations — your own air-conditioned vehicle and an Egyptologist dedicated to your group alone. It is a long day with around five hours of driving, so it suits older children and teenagers better than very young ones. Families travelling with small children often prefer our Dendera-only half-day tour instead; ask us and we will price it for you.

Do children get discounts on this tour?

Yes. Children under 6 travel free of charge, children aged 6–11 receive 50% off, and children aged 12 and over pay the adult rate.
