Tour To Philae Temple, High Dam And The Unfinished Obelisk

Explore the wonders of Aswan with our exclusive Aswan day tours. You will meet your guide at your hotel reception to commence your tour to Philae Temple, High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk.

Aswan High Dam:

Your tour to Philae Temple in Aswan starts at Aswan High Dam. The Nile is the root of Egypt’s culture and life. From ancient Egypt to the present day, Egyptians have tried to monitor the Nile and its floods. They built a small mud-brick dam near Cairo, which stood for several years.

During the British occupation of Egypt, the Aswan Dam was constructed. However, the old Aswan Dam couldn’t handle the high floods, so the High Dam was built. Construction of this dam began in the early 1960s and ended in 1971. It stands as one of the great engineering feats of the 1960s.

Tour to Philae Temple:

The highlight of your tour to Philae Temple is the stunning Philae Temple itself. This magnificent Temple of Philae, known as the Pearl of Egypt, was built during the Greco-Roman period. Philae, derived from Pilak, the island’s Coptic name, means the isolated spot. The temple was dedicated to Isis, the Goddess of Love and Magic in ancient Egypt.

In the 1970s, due to the impact of the waters from the Aswan Dam and High Dam, workers dismantled the temple into 40,000 parts. They moved it to its current site on the Island of Agalika. During the Coptic period, the Island of Philae was converted into four churches, causing damage to the reliefs and leaving lots of graffiti from travelers to the island.

Unfinished Obelisk:

You will end your tour to Philae Temple at the Unfinished Obelisk. Ancient Egyptians were hard laborers who built obelisks, statues of gods and pharaohs, sarcophagi, coffins, and door jambs in this granite quarry for their kings and pharaohs. They then moved these creations to their final destinations using the Nile. This quarry is called the Unfinished Obelisk because Ancient Egyptian workers left an unfinished obelisk at the site.

The Unfinished Obelisk is the largest piece of granite sculptured in ancient Egypt. It is 43 meters high and weighs 1200 tonnes. Owner of this obelisk is unknown because it is not finished and there is no name left on it but many scholars suggest it was for Hatshepsut or Tuthmosis III.
